Snetterton 13 June 2011 Round 5
The usual double header meeting gave drivers the opportunity to race on the new 300 circuit for the first time. The circuit was generally well received with speeds at the end of the old straight much the same as before due to the faster entry, although the revised Coram raised a few concerns.

With Ben Simms giving this one a miss, championship challenger Jamie Brashaw was expected to take the honours in his ex Acheson March 793, and at the end of the day two wins and the championship lead was his reward although he was pushed hard by the returning Hugh Price in his ex Warwick Chevron B38 who lined up second after qualifying just ahead of brother Jonathan (his March as scruffy as ever – only he will understand that!) and  Dave Clark in his Argo JM6. Chris Remers and Paul Dibden were fifth and sixth, with Dibden complaining of a down on power engine.
Mike Jones was deputising for brother Andy, away studying, in the family Brabham BT38 and easily fastest of the class B cars. Geoff Hoodless ended the session in eighth, struggling with poor handling after an off in testing damaged the front of the car. Bruce Bartell and Peter Hiscocks rounded out the top ten and completed the competitive class A cars ahead of Graham Kiddy and Gareth Walters both in class B cars. Bringing up the rear was Iain Rowley in Colin Painters unique Oliroy, having its first run since 2009, after completing just two laps before a drop in fuel pressure signalled the beginning of a frustrating day trying to solve the problem.

Race 1

As expected Brashaw led away at the start and ran out the winner after 15 minutes racing, completing just seven laps. Hugh Price kept him honest finishing just 2.8 seconds behind and just ahead of Hoodless who had a great run and rounded out the top three from eighth on the grid, the car much better than in qualifying. Jonathan Price has a scary run to fourth after reducing the local pigeon population. Damage to the pigeon was greater than the damage to the March. Jones won the 1600 class easily and bagged fifth overall just ahead of Remers and Bartell. Kiddy finished second in class B, still learning the Dastle, ahead of Hiscocks who stalled at the start but managed to overcome a slow Dibden who tumbled down the order from sixth with an even slower Ralt. Finishers were completed by Walters who had a lonely race in eleventh. At least he was luckier than Clark who retired on lap 2 with more car handling problems and Rowley who after getting up to ninth retired with a recurrence of the fuel pressure problem. Brashaw and Jones set the class records, both over two minutes which was reflected in the pits with a long wait for the cars to come past.

Race 2

Weather conditions dictated things in this race as the rain increased and the track was most definitely wet. Clark, who pulled off on the warm up lap, and Bartell were non starters reducing the grid to eleven. At the end of the first lap it was Hugh Price who led the field ahead of Brashaw and Hoodless but Brashaw restored grid order past the pits next lap and the top three finished in the order Brashaw, Price and Hoodless with Hugh again keeping Jamie honest. At the start Kiddy somehow managed to pass the four cars in front of him and annex fourth just ahead of Jones for the class lead. Jones redressed the balance next lap only to spin, letting Kiddy past, and spent the rest of the race chasing the class lead. He failed by a few seconds at the end with Kiddy finishing a fine fourth just ahead of Jones in fifth. Price J dropped to sixth after a spin on the opening lap only just ahead of a still struggling Dibden who was likewise just ahead of Hiscocks after a steady run. Walters rounded out the finishers after a brief spin at Coram but was at least luckier than Remers, who retired on lap one with damage after someone hit a rear wheel, and Rowley who again made a good start but was thwarted by another lack of fuel pressure on lap 2.

Thanks to all who made the effort. Brands GP next in a combined race with our French colleagues should be interesting.
