CLASSIC F3

BRUCE BARTELL
(30/03/57-06/01/17)

I have known Bruce for years through business. He has always had an interest in fast cars and for many years did track days, mainly Lloyds motor club days in a variety of rapid road cars. His final road car before embarking on racing was a GTD Ford GT 40 which gave him the ultimate buzz to want to go racing. This matured when I was rebuilding the ex Keegan B34 Chevron which he decided he wanted to buy. This was in 2008 and he did a season or two with us in Classic F3 and had instruction from Rob Wilson in a desire to progress further.

A horrible accident with a wayward Radical in testing for a Silverstone race in 2011 almost totally destroyed the B34 but Bruce and Mile Catlow rebuilt it. In the meantime his son Max, an aspiring rugby player enjoyed the racing scene that Bruce had become involved in so a Merlyn FF1600 was acquired in which Max acquitted himself well. Bruce and Max became friends with Nigel and Callum Grant and all have subsequently played a significant part in the success of Historic FF in the past few seasons.

Bruce was diagnosed with cancer in 2014. Unable to drive himself in 2015 Max took over his B34 and duly wrapped up the CF3 title in impressive style. Bruce has battled valiantly for the past two years, being a constant supporter of Max at all the HSCC meetings. In 2016 they concentrated on doing some continental CER races sharing Mike Catlow's Chevron B19. The season ended with a satisfactory third place for Max at the Goodwood Revival in their Elva MK 7.

He has fought his illness valiantly in the past two years without any desire to give in to it. Having been very successful in business he had every intention two years ago of easing down and devoting more of his time to his family and racing.

A great friend who will be very missed by all.
